TEAS 7 Science: The Section That Decides Most Applications
Science is the largest TEAS section and the one applicants most often fail to clear. Roughly half of it is anatomy and physiology. Here is what is actually tested, how the questions are framed, and where to spend limited revision time.

Fifty questions, and half of them are one topic
The Science section is 50 questions in 60 minutes — the largest section on the TEAS 7 and the tightest on time after English. Its content is not evenly spread. Human anatomy and physiology accounts for roughly half the section, with biology, chemistry and scientific reasoning sharing the remainder.
That imbalance is the single most useful planning fact available to you. An applicant who spends equal time on chemistry and on anatomy has misallocated their revision by a factor of two or more.
At 72 seconds per question, Science is also where candidates most often run short of time. Because there is no penalty for a wrong answer, the correct endgame is to answer every remaining item even if you are guessing.
The best academic structure does not decorate the clinical reasoning—it makes that reasoning visible.
Which systems to learn first
Cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological content appears most reliably, followed by renal, digestive, endocrine and immune. Skeletal, muscular, reproductive and integumentary content appears but more thinly.
Learn each system as a process rather than a parts list. For the cardiovascular system, be able to trace blood from the vena cava through the right heart, pulmonary circulation, left heart and out to the body, naming valves in order. For the renal system, follow filtrate from glomerulus to collecting duct and know what is reabsorbed where.
Homeostasis is the connective idea the test rewards. Questions frequently describe a disturbance — falling blood pressure, rising carbon dioxide, dropping blood glucose — and ask which system responds and how. If you can predict the compensatory response, you can answer a question you have never seen.
How the questions are actually framed
TEAS science questions are predominantly application rather than recall. Rather than asking which hormone the pancreas secretes, a question is more likely to describe a patient whose blood glucose is falling and ask which hormone is released and what it does.
A second common frame gives you a structure and asks for its function, or a function and asks for its structure. This is why learning structures in isolation performs badly: the mapping between the two is what is tested.
Scientific reasoning items ask you to identify independent and dependent variables, spot a control group, judge whether a conclusion follows from data, or read a graph. These are cheap marks for anyone who has met basic experimental design, and they are frequently skipped in revision.
Chemistry: foundational, not advanced
The chemistry on the TEAS is introductory. Atomic structure, the periodic table and periodic trends, ionic and covalent bonding, chemical equations and balancing, reaction types, states of matter, solutions and concentration, and acids and bases with pH.
You are not asked to perform complex stoichiometry, but you are expected to reason about relationships: what happens to concentration when solvent is added, what a lower pH means about hydrogen ion concentration, which bond type forms between a metal and a non-metal.
If chemistry is your weakest area, learn the periodic trends and the acid–base material first. They recur more than any other chemistry content and they are self-contained.
Biology: cells, energy and inheritance
Biology on the TEAS centres on cell structure and organelle function, the cell cycle and mitosis, cellular respiration and photosynthesis at a conceptual level, macromolecules, and classical Mendelian genetics.
Genetics questions usually involve a simple monohybrid cross. Being fluent with a Punnett square, and with the vocabulary of genotype, phenotype, homozygous, heterozygous, dominant and recessive, covers most of what appears.
For respiration and photosynthesis, know inputs, outputs and where each stage occurs. You will not be asked to name every intermediate, but you may well be asked which organelle is involved or what is produced.
Where marks are lost
The most common error is running out of time and leaving items blank. The second is misreading a question that asks for the structure when you have learned the function, or the reverse. The third is over-thinking: TEAS science is introductory, and an answer that requires advanced reasoning is usually the wrong one.
Applicants also lose marks by revising from nursing-school-level material. Anatomy texts written for a full semester course go far deeper than the TEAS requires, and studying from them feels productive while covering little of what is tested.
Finally, do not neglect scientific reasoning because it feels unlike the rest. It is a small but reliable block of questions that requires almost no memorisation.
A four-week plan for this section alone
Week one: sit fifty timed science questions cold and record which of the four content areas your errors fall into. Then spend the rest of the week on anatomy and physiology systems only — cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological.
Week two: continue anatomy with renal, endocrine and digestive, and add scientific reasoning, which is quick to secure. Week three: chemistry and biology, weighted toward whichever your diagnostic showed weaker.
Week four: a second timed set of fifty, then targeted revision of whatever it exposes. Practise at full section length rather than in tens, because pacing across fifty questions is a distinct skill from answering any one of them.
