How Much Does the NCLEX Cost? The Full Breakdown Beyond the $200
The registration fee is $200, but that is rarely the whole bill. Licensure fees, fingerprinting, temporary permits and retakes all add up. Here is what to budget and which costs vary by state.

The registration fee
Registering for the NCLEX with Pearson VUE costs $200 in the United States. This fee is paid to NCSBN and covers one attempt at the examination. It is non-refundable and it does not roll over if you do not test within your authorisation window.
Registration is separate from licensure. Paying NCSBN does not apply for your licence; it buys you a seat at the exam. You must also apply to a board of nursing, and that is a second fee.
Your Authorisation to Test is issued once both the board has declared you eligible and registration is complete. It is time-limited — commonly around 90 days, though the window is set by the board — and if it expires you register and pay again.
The best academic structure does not decorate the clinical reasoning—it makes that reasoning visible.
Licensure fees vary considerably by state
Every state board of nursing charges its own application fee for licensure by examination. These commonly fall somewhere between roughly $75 and $300 depending on the jurisdiction, and they are separate from the $200 registration.
Because the figures differ so much and change without notice, do not budget from a third-party list. Go to your board's own fee schedule, which every board publishes.
If you intend to practise in a different state from where you were educated, check whether your state participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, and apply in your state of primary residence.
The costs people forget
Criminal background checks and fingerprinting are required by most boards and are usually billed separately, frequently in the region of $40 to $80 through an approved vendor.
Temporary or interim permits, where a state offers them, carry their own fee. So does verification of your education or of an existing licence from another jurisdiction, if the board requires it.
If you need to change your nursing regulatory body after registering, NCSBN charges a change fee. If you need to reschedule your appointment inside the required notice period, Pearson VUE may charge for that too, or you may forfeit the appointment entirely.
Testing outside the United States
The NCLEX is delivered at international test centres, and testing outside the United States adds an international scheduling fee on top of the $200 registration. Value-added tax applies in some jurisdictions.
Internationally educated candidates usually face additional costs before they reach that point: credentials evaluation through an approved agency, English language proficiency testing where required, and document translation.
These vary widely by country and by board, and together they frequently exceed the exam fee itself. Budget for the whole pathway rather than for the exam alone.
What a retake costs
A retake means paying the $200 registration fee again in full. There is no reduced rate for repeat candidates.
Depending on your board, you may also need to reapply for licensure or pay a re-examination processing fee, and your authorisation window will need to be reissued. In some states that means a second application fee as well.
This is the strongest financial argument for not sitting the exam speculatively. The cost of an additional month of preparation is almost always lower than the cost of an additional attempt.
Preparation costs, in perspective
Question banks and review courses range from free resources through subscriptions of roughly $30 to $60 a month, up to live review courses costing several hundred dollars or more.
Judge these against the retake cost rather than in isolation. A subscription that materially improves your first-attempt chance is cheaper than a second registration plus a second licensure application plus the weeks of delayed earnings while you wait out the retake period.
That said, expensive does not mean effective. Trial the free questions from several providers and judge the rationales before paying anyone.
A realistic total
For a domestically educated candidate testing in the United States, a reasonable planning figure is the $200 registration, plus your state's licensure application fee, plus background check and fingerprinting, plus any permit fee your state offers.
Add preparation costs on top, and add a contingency for the possibility of a retake if you are testing on a tight timeline.
Confirm every state-level number against your board's published fee schedule before you commit. It is the only source that will be current.
